I first saw Daisy-May Demetre walking at the Mini Mode London Kid’s Fashion Week show in September. The first thing that struck me was her elegance and then I realised that she had prosthetic legs and that pretty much blew me away. All it takes is 5 minutes with Daisy to realise that she is so much more than her disability. In fact, with the support of her lovely dad Alex, Daisy is realising her dream of being the World’s Most Inspirational Double Amputee. She can do things that grown men can’t like tyre flipping at the gym, she’s an athlete, she’s an international fashion model and she and Alex have even given a TEDx talk.
This is one kid you don’t want to underestimate.
During our sitting I intentionally focused on portrait style photos of Daisy because what I look at when I see her is not her supposed disability, I see a radiant, fierce role model that has a lot to teach this world. Like all great leaders that have come before her Daisy has taken adversity and flipped the coin. She’s turned her disability into a superpower.
My Dad used to tell me this great story about an eccentric bass player he used to gig with in Canada’s remote Northwest Territories called Itchy Crickets. Old Itchy used to have a motto, he would say “I’m not very good but I’ve got lots of guts.” I’ve called on that motto many times in my life in moments of doubt or insecurity. If you’re not so into the Gospel of Itchy then a more famous guru you might know of called Brene Brown would call it “Daring Greatly” The point I’m trying to make here is that unlike Itchy, Daisy IS good AND she has lots of guts. Watch this space, I promise you she’s destined for the stars.

D&A: Long days lots of traveling but we always make it fun
Q: Who is your hero and why?
D&A: My hero is Daisy she saved me from suicide and changed who I am as a person
Daisy’s hero apparently is me lol
Q: What movie have you watched more than any other?
Daisy’s is frozen she loves a good sing song lol
Do you have a question for me?
D&A: What inspires you on a daily basis?
Me: That’s a great question actually. I try to stay open to inspiration all the time but you know, sometimes life gets in the way. When I’m in need of a boost I listen to Unstoppable by Sia because that really gets me into a positive frame of mind. I love how she’s this person whose endured horrible pain and suffering and went into recovery and has emerged on the other side. Her songs are really like anthems for processing your pain and finding your joy. I like that she’s really honest about how much growth can hurt sometimes. It’s all a process, but you don’t need me to tell you that.
